In 1998, when we began providing CHROs with operational metrics, benchmarks, best practices data and trends analysis, corporate staffing was a more unified profession. The tools of the staffing trade were few and well understood; job markets were opaque and tilted in favor of employers; and in most companies, staffing was viewed as a mid-level, largely operational and administrative function.

Radical Change
Today’s staffing environment is very different. The Internet has radically changed labor markets, removing geographic barriers, making them extraordinarily transparent and talent friendly. Technology has created a dizzying array of professional tools. And progressive managements have combined the traditional mid-level responsibilities of HR into a board-level function called human capital management. In the best run, most profitable enterprises HCM is now a strategic function on a par with finance, marketing and sales.

Data Based Decisions
CHROS in this altered HR ecosystem have a much greater need for reliable information about where the world is headed (trends), what good performance looks like (metrics and benchmarks) and what’s working and what’s not (best practices). Their companies now expect them make decisions and spend money using based on business logic, ROI and hard data.

Data Sources
There are more than 125 Internet sources for HCM research, including corporations, consultancies, vendors, academics, research groups, associations and independent writers. But because of overlapping HCM terminology, the way search algorithms work, and registration requirements, much of the best material is hard to find. Unless, that is, one knows where to look.
